Previous embryo preservation technologies involved slowly freezing the embryo and had a very low success rate because of the ice crystals that resulted which damaged the embryo.
Before the embryo is preserved in liquid nitrogen it is put through a process that removes the water leaving it in a glassey, dehydrated state. Embryo vitrification is very successful and is being utilized here at Northeast Shires.
